Liz Murphey Second Round Results (Individuals)
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Heather Lott led the Kentucky women’s golf team on Saturday in Athens, Ga., at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic held at the University of Georgia Golf Course (par 72, 6,335 yards). The Wildcats, as a team, improved by four strokes from their first round score and finished at 15-over par to enter the final round in 20th place.
Lott, a native of Baton Rouge, La., birdied each of her first two holes, the par 5 17th hole and the par 5 18th hole. Lott led UK in its last tournament, the LSU Tiger Golf Classic, with a 31st-place finish.
“We got off to a better start today with some solid pars and birdies early on,” UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “Unfortunately, we struggled to keep our momentum going through the whole round. Sophomore Heather Lott really stepped up for us today. She made some very important putts throughout her round to score 75. We worked hard after the round on what we needed to build our confidence back up and we will be ready to go out and play better tomorrow.”
Sophomore Ashleigh Albrecht, who led Kentucky after its first round, fired a 9-over par 81 on Saturday. Fellow sophomore Betsie Johnson improved by six strokes from her first round and recorded a 7-over par 79. Freshman Liz Breed carded her second consecutive round of 8-over par and junior Ashlee Rose finished at 11-over par for the round.
The best-ball format used at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic counts each team’s low score from each hole during the round, not the low four total scores of the day. All five players from each team play together, as opposed to seeded players from three or four teams playing together. The individual champion will still be determined as the player with the best relation-to-par score over the 54 holes played this weekend.
The Wildcats are scheduled to tee off on the 16th hole on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Senior Rachael Pruett lines up her shot during the Cardinal Classic in the fall. Ball State tied with Western Michigan and Louisiana-Monroe for 13th out of 18 teams at the Arkansas-Little Rock Golf Classic.
Ball State’s women’s golf team tied for 13th out of 18 teams at the Arkansas-Little Rock Golf Classic Tuesday.
The Cardinals tied with Western Michigan and Louisiana-Monroe.
Coach Katherine Mowat said she was pleased with her team’s play in the second day of the tournament.
“Our scores were higher than we wanted them to be,” Mowat said. “We had a few bad rounds, but we really came back and redeemed ourselves the second day.”
Ball State’s team score of 301 Tuesday left senior Brittany Kelly happy with the team.
“We shot a 301 as a team, which is one of our lowest round scores in a while,” Kelly said. “It’s great to see how our team came around. It takes the pressure off of you when you know the other girls are shooting in the seventies.”
Kelly placed fifth individually in the Arkansas-Little Rock Golf Classic, shooting a seven-over par 223.
It is her sixth top-10 finish this year.
“I’m striking the ball well right now,” Kelly said. “I’m making my putts and mentally I feel good.”
Kelly’s work ethic has allowed her to experience success and stay in contention to win tournaments.
“A lot of golfers go to tournaments, but you know when [Kelly] goes that she has a chance to win,” Mowat said. “She was only three or four shots off the lead [and] she could have won the tournament.”
Kelly said when she sees she is in contention to win, it motivates her to do better.
“When I’m a few shots off the lead it motivates me to make my putts,” Kelly said. “I put pressure on myself and play to the situation.”
Sophomore Autumn Duke and junior Katie Windlan tied for 57th overall with a pair of 237 scores.
Duke had a rough first round, carding a 15 over-par 87, but finished with a three over-par 75 in the last two rounds.
Senior Rachael Pruett tallied a 22 over-par 238, and freshman Meghan Perry managed a 32 over-par 248.
Oral Roberts won the Arkansas-Little Rock Golf Classic with a total team score of 903.

Wie falters in second round of Kia Classic
By Ann Miller
POSTED: 03:23 p.m. HST, Mar 25, 2011
CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif.>>Hawaii’s Michelle Wie bogeyed three of her final four holes today to fall into a tie for seventh and far back of leader Jiyai Shin halfway through the Kia Classic.
There was a 3-hour rain delay this morning at Industry Hills Golf Club. The second round is scheduled to finish tomorrow and the third round will start after the cut is made. The tournament is scheduled to finish Sunday.
Wie began the day at 5 under par and two off the lead. She started on the back nine, bogeyed the 10th and birdied the 11th. A bogey on the 15th left her 4 under at the turn.
She birdied Nos. 2 and 4 to get to 6 under and grab a share of fourth, but bogeys at Nos. 6, 7 and 9 gave her a 2-over-par 75. At 3-under 143, she had a share of seventh when she finished, with with about half the field still playing their second round at 6 p.m. local time.
Shin, ranked No. 2 in the world, finished soon after Wie and shot a 9-under 64. At 12 under for the tournament, she has a six-shot lead.
Hilo’s Kimberly Kim shot 77 and is at 6-over 152.

Men’s golf claims second straight top-five finish
Mar 17th
JACKSON, Tenn. – Senior Warren Hood tied for sixth place to lead the Arkansas State men’s golf team to a fifth place finish out of 15 teams at the Grover Page Classic.
This marks the second consecutive tournament the Red Wolves have finished among the top five teams.
The Red Wolves shot a three-round 900, which included a low round of 288 posted for the second 18 holes.
After close to a four-hour rain delay Monday, A-State shot an opening round 302 to complete the day in ninth place.
The second 18 holes were suspended due to darkness, but the Red Wolves came back Tuesday to complete the round with a 14-stroke improvement to move up to fifth place in the standings.
ASU’s second-round 288 was the fourth lowest round among all teams at the tournament.
While the Red Wolves shot a 310 to close the tournament, it was enough to edge Tennessee State, Union University and Jackson State by one stroke and hold their standing at fifth place.
“We obviously didn’t put our best foot forward, but I was proud of the guys for rallying in the second round,” said ASU head coach Steve Johnson. “Still, we’ve got to work on some things through Spring Break and perform better our next time out.”
The Red Wolves collected their sixth top-10 finish of the year.
Murray State claimed the title with an 862, while Morehead State finished second with an 884 and Tennessee Tech third with an 885.
Hood’s finish was his best since tying for fifth place at the Memphis Intercollegiate his sophomore season. He posted a combined 219, which matched his lowest three-round score of the season.
His 219 included a second-round 70 that was not only the lowest score by an ASU player at the tournament, but also tied his lowest round this season.
Competing as an individual, freshman Chance Holden tied for 20th place to join Hood among the top-25 individual finishers.
While Holden’s combined 223 wasn’t his lowest three-round score of the season, he picked up his best finish of his young career.
“I’m real proud of Warren and Chance for the way they played,” Johnson said. “Once got his first top-20 finish and that shows signs of improvement.”
Also competing for A-State, Lloyd du Preez finished tied for 28th place with a 226, Chris Pledger and Cory Williamson tied for 36th with a 228 and Matt Howton tied for 61st place with a 234.
“Chris Pledger has fought back problems the last two tournaments and he easily could’ve pulled up and sat this one out, but I’m extremely proud of him for choosing to play and carry his bag all 54 holes,” Johnson said.
The Red Wolves return to action March 24-25 at the Barona Cup, hosted by San Diego State, in San Diego, Calif.

Golf-Mentor Mickelson plays second fiddle to student Fowler
Feb 25th
By Mark Lamport-Stokes MARANA, Arizona, Feb 24 (Reuters) – It was a case of the precocious student upstaging the teacher when Rickie Fowler stunned fellow American Phil Mickelson 6&5 in the second round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on Thursday. Mickelson has been something of a mentor to Fowler since the young Californian turned professional in 2009 but that counted for nothing in their duel at Dove Mountain as his opponent produced sizzling form. The 22-year-old Fowler, making his debut in the elite World Golf Championships (WGC) event, overwhelmed the four-times major winner with five birdies and two eagles, one of them conceded. “He’s a heck of a player and he played some good golf today,” fourth seed Mickelson told reporters after suffering his heaviest defeat in 11 appearances at the event. “He doesn’t really have a weakness. He’s a complete player and he really put it all together today. I didn’t quite have my ‘A’ game. I just couldn’t keep pace.” Fowler, who wore a pink cap, pink shirt and pink golf shoes along with white slacks, executed a series of exquisite shots to book his place in the third round where he will face compatriot Matt Kuchar. In dazzling desert sunshine, he chipped in from off the green to birdie the par-four 10th and then eagled the par-five 11th after hitting a four-iron to 20 feet and sinking the putt. Fowler sealed victory at the par-five 13th where he struck a superb four-iron to within two feet before Mickelson, 10 feet from the hole in three, conceded the match. MICKELSON WATCH “Phil is definitely one of the guys I’ve liked to watch for a long time,” Fowler said. “I love playing with him. Obviously it was huge for me going out and getting the job done today. “In a way, he’s taken me under his wing a bit. He played a couple of practice rounds with me early on when I turned pro. And I was able to learn from him a little when I was over in Wales with him at the Ryder Cup.” Asked if he was overawed by any player in the modern game, world number 33 Fowler replied: “No, not really. “I wouldn’t say there’s anyone that scares me in a way or I’m sitting there staring at them. But it’s definitely something I’ve dreamed about — playing out here with guys like Phil and Tiger (Woods).” Fowler felt he had established control against Mickelson after going three up after nine holes. “Phil pushed a shot out of the fairway bunker (on nine) into the desert and chipped it across and back across, and gave me the hole,” he said. “So that was kind of the turning point there. And I chipped in (on 10) and kind of went on my run from there.” (Editing by Steve Ginsburg; To comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

PARRISH, Fla. – After being muddled in a four-way tie for ninth place after Monday’s first round of the Central District Invitational, the Kent State women’s golf team put together the second-best round of the afternoon to jump to fifth place after the first day’s first two rounds.
Junior Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina) paced the Golden Flashes with a pair of one-under 71 rounds. Among just five players to break par through two rounds, Germino is in third place and four strokes behind TCU’s Brooke Beeler for the tournament lead.

Juniors Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio) and Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) both shaved strokes off their first round efforts to help the Flashes in the afternoon. Marshall benefitted from an even-par 36 on the back nine to finish with a four-over 76 in the afternoon.
Germino was Kent State’s top golfer through the first round with a one-under 71. Germino tallied a three-under 33 on the front nine with a trio of birdies and benefitted from an eagle on the par-5 No. 11.
